Open Letter to Our Partners, Donors, and the Global Community
Subject: Our Commitment to Raising Awareness and Protecting Children Amid the Somaliland Drought Crisis
Hargeisa, Somaliland – April 27, 2025
To our valued partners, supporters, and fellow humanitarians,
Today, we write to you not simply as an organization—but as a voice for the thousands of children and families across Somaliland whose lives are being upended by a crisis they did not cause.
The National Disaster Preparedness and Food Reserve Authority (NADFOR) has declared a severe humanitarian crisis in Somaliland. Driven by prolonged drought, repeated rainfall failures, and the escalating effects of climate change, 691,850 people (115,308 households) are now in urgent need of assistance.
This crisis is not just about climate. It is about children going to bed hungry. It is about mothers walking miles under the scorching sun to fetch a jerrycan of water. It is about families being uprooted from their homes, and communities losing the fragile balance that sustains them.
At SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland, our mission has always been clear: to protect and care for children who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing it. But in moments like these, that mission becomes even more urgent.
We have launched a 10-day awareness campaign—“Voices from the Drought”—to spotlight the human impact of this climate-driven emergency. Through stories, photos, and field updates from our programs, we will amplify the voices of those who often go unheard.
What we need is an act of hope in a time of great hardship—a reminder that even amid crisis, we must look to the future and root our response in resilience.
We do not take lightly the responsibility we hold—to respond with urgency, compassion, and transparency. Our teams are working on the ground to ensure that families receive the support they need—not only to survive this crisis, but to recover from it with dignity.
We invite you to stand with us.
To amplify this message.
To support local solutions.
To ensure no child is left behind in the face of this drought.
Together, we can be the difference between despair and hope.
